| We manage our Literacy block using the Daily 5 program. It isn't a curriculum, but it makes sure that a teacher has plenty of time to meet with students for guided reading and/or individual conferences while the rest of the class is actively engaged in literacy activities. These "Daily 5" activities are: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Words, and Work on Writing. I designed my Daily 5 routine after reading the book The Daily 5 by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. | Below left: Two buddies read the same book. Each takes a turn reading a portion of the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Below right: Another student listens to one of the Series of Unfortunate Events books. Listening to Reading allows us to read books that might be challenging, and allows us to listen to fluent readers. |

| Left: A student works on words by building vocabulary words with word cards. Right: This same student uses a digital camera to take a picture of her finished product. I upload these pictures and hold the students accountable for their work. |

Most research said that my 5th graders would be too old for these activities, but they LOVE them and are great ways to teach word formation and spelling. Sometimes we spell vocabulary words, and other times we spell high-frequency words. |
