My attempt at taming the paper trap...
In the upper grades, there are a lot of papers to grade and/or check off as completed. I often found I collected
about 3 to 4 different items per day, which can cause quite a pile of stuff on my teacher table.
I decided to use a binder, and so far it is working well! Here are the instructions on how I use a binder to store
papers that need to be graded:
I started with a 2 inch binder.
I decided on 2 inch because
it will still fit in my teacher
bag, but is big enough to
hold about 10 piles of
papers.
This is just a plain
viewbinder decorated with
scrapbooking paper from a
craft store.
I bought 10 poly folders with 3 ring
holes in them. I got them for about a
dollar each at Target.
When I collect a stack of
papers from the class, I
immediately place them in
their own poly folder in the
binder. This may be
something I would be willing
to train a student to do.
After I grade or check off an
assignment, I quickly write in the
grades on one spreadsheet that I keep
in the front pocket of the binder. I do
this so I don't have to bring home my
HUGE gradebook. I can simply fill in
the grades at a later time.
Once I've graded papers and
written the scores on my
spreadsheet, I put the papers
back in the poly folder and move
the folder to the back of the
binder, behind this "Graded
Papers" divider. When I get to
school, I place the papers to be
filed in the students' "Wednesday
Folders" that go home to parents
each week.
After I'm done grading
something, and I know I might
have to grade a few more late
papers coming in, I place the
answer keys in the back
pocket of the binder. This
makes one central location for
all of the answer keys.
